Just got home from my first ever Autocross. I expected it to be fun, but holy shit it was more fun than I could even imagine. Did it with the regional Porsche club so it was a small group of great people, very laid back and just a blast. Had an instructor with me for the first few runs and rode along with another in an FR-S which helped immensely. By the end of the afternoon runs I had gotten in rhythm, stopped mutilating cones (seriously, I need to figure out where the right side of my car is) and posted consistently better times, with the last two runs being exactly the same time and the best of the day,
I was impressed by the little sonic, and the instructor that was with me (who was driving a boxster) seemed surprised by how well it did. I think the only car I actually beat was a Kia Optima, but I wasn't terribly far behind some much better drivers in the FR-S and WRX.
I'll post times when they are available, and I'm going to go through my go pro footage tonight to post it later. Special thanks to any of the guys out there that may lurk here for making my first Autocross experience so great, I'm totally hooked and can't wait to do it again soon.

The next one is in 3 weeks, but I may be in Lawrence that Sunday. Strongly considering coming back early to make it to AutoX now though...

Get some crappy tires and learn to drive on them, then once you can't improve any further get some better tires, just keep upgrading until you are on Hoosiers and just destroying everyone. Power isn't as important in autox as tires are. I was beaten by a Fiero because he had max performance summer tires and I am still on crappy all season that can't hold grip for more than a second!

I'd literally be too afraid my van would tip over in the corners, and the transmission might implode.

Glad to hear you had a blast. I've been autocrossing for a while, but its my first year doing it with my current 2013 WRX. Remember not to fixate on how other drivers are doing and how you compare to them. Focus on learning the course, improving your times and, most of all, having fun!

I drove the Tail of the Dragon this weekend (see related post)...it's like 11 miles of auto-x with undulations.

Yeah...I lived in Illinois for nearly 27 years of my 27.5 years of existence, I know the feeling. (Assuming the Jayhawk reference has you living somewhere flat.)

Kansas. Wichita to be precise, since eastern Kansas has hills (but of the rolling type, so not exciting)
